An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number looks like a Social Security Number — nine digits in the same XXX-XX-XXXX shape — and is instantly distinguishable because it always begins with a 9. That resemblance is where the trouble starts, because people reasonably assume the two numbers do similar things. They do not.
An ITIN does not authorize you to work as an employee in the United States. It does not provide eligibility for Social Security benefits. It does not alter your immigration status. What it does is let a person who is not eligible for an SSN comply with United States tax obligations — which becomes mandatory the moment a U.S. corporation or LLC you own generates income.
And the application itself carries a real cost that has nothing to do with money: done alone, it often means posting your original, physical passport to a federal processing centre and waiting months for it to come back.
Three ways in, by what brought you here.
The format, the eligibility, and the four things it does not grant.
The document rules, and the error that produces an outright rejection.
A U.S. entity generating income is what makes the filing mandatory.
Two of them identify a person and one identifies a company. The company’s number lives in the neighbouring section of this edition.
The IRS applies strict documentation rules to this form. A single formatting error results in an outright rejection, and the delay lands on the business that was waiting for the number.
Applying alone often means mailing your original, physical passport to a federal processing centre for months. There are ways to avoid that, and they are decided before the envelope is sealed.
It does not authorize employment, it does not create eligibility for Social Security benefits, and it does not alter immigration status. Planning around any of those is planning around nothing.
An ITIN does not authorize you to work as an employee in the United States. Work authorization is a separate matter entirely, and no taxpayer number confers it.
It does not provide eligibility for Social Security benefits. The nine-digit resemblance is a formatting coincidence, not a shared function.
It does not alter your immigration status in any direction. Applying for one neither improves nor endangers a position; it is a tax-compliance instrument.
Format, eligibility, the comparison with an SSN, and the four things it does not grant.
An EIN identifies the entity, not the person. Different section, different problem.
Submitting Form W-7, the documentation rules, and the passport question.
Once a U.S. corporation or LLC you own generates income, a personal tax return follows.
An ITIN is formatted like an SSN but always begins with the number nine, which makes it immediately identifiable.
The application is Form W-7, submitted to the IRS under strict documentation rules.
Not employment authorization, not Social Security eligibility, not any change of immigration status.
Complying with United States tax obligations when you are not eligible for an SSN.
The hardest part of a W-7 is proving identity with original documents. Notary Public Center prepares and certifies the document set a U.S. filing requires, and handles the authentication when any of it has to cross a border.
